Today marked a week of no meat or dairy products for me. I will admit that I have been taking whey protein supplementation after I workout. Whey protein is a product derived from cow’s milk. I plan to continue taking the whey protein until the container runs dry. At which time I’ll take a different form of protein supplementation via soy or other source of protein (still researching on what’s available).

I allowed myself today to have a “cheat” meal. I had a craving for a Quizno’s Chicken Carbanara toasted sub. I have actually been craving one all weekend, but I held out. So, at work today I went to lunch with some co-workers and picked up a Chicken Carbanara. We got back to the office and sat down in the conference room to enjoy our sandwiches. I got all setup with some orange juice and napkins and opened my sandwich and took a bite… ehh… That’s how I felt. The sandwich wasn’t as good as I was hoping. I have in the past loved me a Chicken Carbanara sandwich from Quizno’s but today it just didn’t do it for me. I’m not sure if my mental opinion has really changed or if something physically has changed as a result of my diet change.

I do think, however, that as a result of going vegan people are faced with a challenge… to replace the foods you enjoyed with something that does not contain animal products. By cutting out meat and dairy products I cut a good bit of my diet.
This forced me to become more creative in the foods I ate. I had to explore more options. This has resulted in experiencing new tastes and some old tastes that I have forgotten long ago.

Before deciding to go vegan I did find myself consuming less and less red meat and less cheese and I hardly touched pork products. So, cutting out meat and dairy was not a huge blow to my diet, it only seemed like part of my progression on the path I was on.

The hardest part is having food that I can eat nearby. There are plenty of food products that could be considered vegan such as some candies and chips. I prefer to have a bit more variety and healthier food on hand to consume. I have picked up a vegan cook book and I’m cooking more than I was previously.

So why am I doing this? I have to confess, it is for more selfish reasons that I have chosen to transition to a more vegan diet. I began reading “The China Study” recently (I haven’t finished it yet). In that book it details some studies done that conclude that animal food products are causing cancer and other diseases in humans.

So for now I’ll continue with the vegan diet and see how it goes…

Finally, winter has really broken it’s icy grip on the Northern Virginia area and the sun has decided to come out and shine. It is a wonderful day, 75 degrees Fahrenheit, slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky. Ahh…. I love spring time… smells like track season!

My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the shootings that took place on the Virginia Tech Campus on Monday, April 16, 2007. No words can truly comfort those that have lost loved ones in this tragic event.

I’m upset to hear about what has happened at Virginia Tech with this shooting. That a person would take up arms and seek out to harm others. I’m truly saddened by what has happened. I hope that the students and faculty at Virginia Tech can one day return to their school and feel safe on the campus and pursue the educational endeavors that the campus is meant for.

I attended a reliability engineering class for work today and traffic was terrible. Of course DC traffic is terrible anytime for a guy who grew up in Souther-Middle Tennessee and went to college in Northern Alabama. It took over two hours to drive from the conference center to get back to my apartment. Ridiculous.

I got to my polling center and was informed that I was the last person in line. Whew… I barely made it.

I’m glad this day has come and eventually be over and I’m proud I got into the polls and placed my vote even though it was not easy getting there.

I’m tired of the ads slinging mud at each candidate. It is terrible. Does anyone remember a lesson when they were a kid that went something like, don’t make fun of people because you are really just trying to pull them down to make yourself look better? And that is not an honorable way to act.

I haven’t kept count on who has slung more mud. I’m just tired of seeing the ads, jeezzz…

But as I’ve talked about with others, all we are going to hear about now is how this candidate should have done this or that to win and blah….

I noticed yesterday I had received a text message on my phone that looked like spam. It came from a weird number (12 digits). I looked at the message and disregarded as I didn’t have much time to mess with it and hoped it would pass with no incident.

This morning I awoke to find I had received two more during the night. I start to investigate where the messages are coming from. The three messages had the same first 11 digits and the last one iterated from 3 to 4 to 5. So, I assumes they were all related. I tried the reverse lookup used for phone numbers. No dice. I get offered to pay $14.95 for a full report. Thanks, but no thanks.

I lookup articles about blocking spam text messages to cellphones and find some information. Evidently Verizon offers some help with this with their vtext.com website. Check this site here for more info.

The gist of it is for Verizon users. Go to vtext.com. Login with your mobile number and password. (If you have not set one up do so.) Click on “My TXT” from the top menu bar on the site and go down to “TXT Blocking” for the settings. You can block messages from the web and certain e-mail addresses and domina names. Some good settings to work with there if you are on Verizon and having trouble.

Unfortunately, it did not have configuration to block from a phone number as was my issue. So, I kept looking. I read on Lifehacker here. That someone had some success with replying with just the word “UNSUBSCRIBE.” Sounds good to me, so I give that a try and I immediately get a response back of:

What the heck? I was a bit frustrated as it seemed this source of text messages was almost mocking me by responding immediately and denying my request. But, I realized hey this looks like an e-mail or a notification of an e-mail. All the messages I received were a product or company I had purchased from before. I check my GMail accounts and don’t find any similar messages. I look at the rejection message again. Hmmm… Mail Header. I can find out where this message is getting sent to. To a particular e-mail address or my phone directly. I send back a message with just “MH” in the message. I get a reply back and realize that the message is being sent to my hotmail account. Man, I hate Microsoft and their crap.

I login to my hotmail and find settings for a MSN to VZW text messaging service that has somehow been activated for my number. Yet, I don’t use my hotmail as I abandoned it years ago because I was receiving too much spam. I only login to read some of the messages I get as about 4.21% of the messages I get there are ones I signed up for or would actually read. I deleted my Verizon account information. Hopefully, that will keep spam away for a little while longer…knock on wood…

I love Halloween. It has always been a fun holiday for me. As a kid I got to go trick-or-treating. As I got older I enjoyed getting a group of friends together and going to a haunted house or haunted forest. One thing I have always enjoyed about the Halloween holiday is the music.
